Position description

The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a clinician educator at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical). The ideal candidate will also be eligible to be the Division Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This position does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine, and our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The MCH is a 150-bed hospital with 12- bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, plus an 8-bed step down unit, a 52-bed Neonatal Intensive Care unit, and a full-service emergency department. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead the Division in its clinical and academic missions in addition to contributing as a full member of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The Division Director oversees 25 pediatric emergency medicine staff physician core members as well as 9 part-time emergency physicians. The Division Director is also the Medical Director of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, a state-of-the-art, 39-bed Emergency Department with an annual patient census of ~75 000 visits. In addition to clinical expertise, the unit’s members have proven academic strengths in simulation, medical education, clinical informatics, and epidemiology.

Job Duties

The successful candidate is expected to be an active physician member of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC. Administrative duties as Division Director are expected to require approximately 50-60% effort. Specific responsibilities of the Division Director will include:

  1. fostering the wellness and professional development of pediatric emergency medicine team members;

  2. ensuring excellence in clinical care delivery;

  3. ensuring delivery of the academic mission, including promoting research and providing a safe learning environment;

  4. representing the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the level of the Department of Pediatrics.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic mission of the Department (teaching and supervision of clinical trainees and/or graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees) and demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in these activities. Other responsibilities will include participation in academic and administrative committees.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree or equivalent;

  • Hold or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine from the Collège des médecins du Québec;

  • Have completed postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics, and must have completed specialty training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);

  • Have at least 5 years of experience in pediatric emergency medicine as well as demonstrated leadership experience;

  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
