PCC Strategic Directions 2009-2014
Founded in 1960 as
the Assembly of Canadian University Paediatric Department
Heads, the Paediatric Chairs of Canada (PCC) represent all
16 university affiliated teaching hospitals in Canada. Half
of all Canadian paediatricians work within PCC Departments
of Paediatrics which provide health care to children in diverse
regions across Canada.
Mission
The mission of the Paediatric Chairs of Canada (PCC) is to
provide national leadership in paediatric research and education
to promote the health and health care of children and youth.
Goals & Objectives
The goals and objectives of this national organization are
to:
- Enhance our national and international advocacy for pediatric
education and research to improve the health of infants,
children and youth.
- Enhance our role in the development of high quality, high
impact paediatric oriented research that spans the continuum
from prevention to promotion of paediatric health.
- Promote and enhance our role as leaders in paediatric
education at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing
medical education levels.
- Promote and assist in the development of effective human
resource planning for academic pediatrics and child and
youth health care delivery.
- Work together to promote child and youth access to coordinated
health services in the best possible environment within
academic health science centres and the communities they
serve.
- Develop collaborative relationships with other national
and international organizations that will assist our Assembly
in fulfilling its mission.
Addressing the Challenges of Canadian Departments
of Paediatrics
PCC is committed to implementing transitional strategies
and processes to address the priorities and challenges of
many Canadian Departments of Paediatrics.
Priorities & Challenges
- Achieving optimal recognition within health sciences
centres without being free-standing children’s hospitals
- Sustaining optimal clinical care programs for children
& youth
- Achieving and sustaining the required critical mass
to deliver tertiary care across all regions
- Achieving and sustaining the required critical mass
needed to address current research challenges
- Defining the needs and uniqueness of “Academic
Paediatrics” within the current climate of “Health
Care Reform”
- Building on the individual strengths of academic paediatrics
across Canada by establishing a national infrastructure
to address key child and youth health issues
- Increasing the national profile of paediatrics within
all levels of government, research agencies etc…..
Transitional Strategies & Processes
- To provide evidence that supports the need for transitional
strategies and processes
- To identify strategies for “Best Practice”
in the continuous and comprehensive care of children and
youth with chronic health conditions
- To determine health care priorities for the care of
children, youth and families across Canada
- To address the discontinuation of care and treatment
between paediatric and adult services
- To focus on treatment needs to include ongoing health
maintenance and monitoring
